THE 6 + 1 ART GROUP
This group began in 2000 when six women and one man were participants together in a local art course. Wanting to continue painting together on a regular basis, they found a community room in Sarnia and met weekly.
Our group is now 16 years old and has expanded to 31 members, meeting one morning a week to paint, socialize, share ideas and offer constructive critiques of each others artwork. We occasionally challenge one another to different artistic styles and share our results at our weekly get together. Enjoying our social time as well as the arts, we get together monthly for a group lunch date. Our yearly highlight is our Christmas Dinner and Christmas Card Exchange where we each hand paint a card and randomly swap cards.
In the past we have held many group shows, but now we select a few paintings each to adorn the walls of two local eating establishments, changing artwork every few months. Our members work in watercolour, acrylics, oils, graphite, pastel and coloured pencil with styles ranging from photo-realism through representational to abstract.
Over the years we become more than just artists sharing a common hobby, we have become very close friends sharing our ideas, our struggles our accomplishments and our artistic endeavours.
Rumba Through Place
The movement between varied mediums of painting and sculpture, create a gesamtkunstwerk. Shifting from drawings to paintings and to mix media, lend to continued ideas of the abstraction of the human experience. In obscuring confines of form and expression, the sonic and visual and the experience and imitation, it is my hope the viewer will question positions of dominance in how we treat our world and how we treat each other through a line quadrant with color or tone made from a string from a machine.
The material presented is composed primarily of the most contemporary and recent work - since my return to the north and Canada after many years in the southern United States as well as present travels and artist residencies throughout Europe.
