Close to Home
Samantha PickardI was born in the Northeast of England, but I consider myself Canadian, having spent most of my life in Sarnia, Ontario. Although my family did move around (we spent a brief time in Texas) I have always LOVED Sarnia, and Lambton County.
I come from an artistic family, on my mother’s side. Enjoying both music and visual arts, I have been contributing to Sarnia’s music scene since the late 90’s, playing keyboards for Jim Chevalier, in bands Trio Chevalier, and Almost Floating, as well as working with other local musical talent. Music is something I have pursued in my adult life, but ART, “Visual” art, has been something that has pursued me, since birth. I have always LOVED Colour. My favourite colour is Red. Always has been, always will be. Although blues are lovely too, red is my colour song. I am self taught and have been fortunate with shows, and commissions. In 2007, I won the Mayors Award for my chalk pastel piece ‘Belle of the Ball’ which is now a part of Lawrence House permanent collection. And in 2023 I won First Place at Gallery in the Grove's, “Call out for Colour” juried exhibition, with Original Chalk Pastel “Pollination for the Nation Station”. Over the last 20 years I have created numerous chalk pastel pieces and participated in local shows and events. But it has been the last 10 years that I have delved into nature influenced artwork, completing works of bears, tigers, foxes, birds, flowers, and insects etc. pushing my creative, and interpretive boundaries, allowing more emotion, movement, and colour. Nature is my muse. I interpret it my own way, and marvel at this wonderful world. Artist/Exhibit Statement Works leaning toward illustrative storytelling, using different mediums from Chalk (soft) pastel, Acrylic Paint, and black ink. Jennifer BainI am an artist who enjoys working across various mediums to create whimsical, interpretative landscapes infused with figures. My work explores the interplay between environment and emotion, blending surreal elements with familiar landscapes. I graduated with honours from the University of Western Ontario, earning a combined degree in Visual Arts and English. Currently, I teach visual arts at the secondary level in London, Ontario, where I share my passion for artistic expression with my students and encourage young minds to explore their own creative potential. My art is a celebration of imagination, narrative, and visual storytelling.
Artist/Exhibit Statement Creating mixed media paintings for the “Close to Home” exhibit involves blending various materials and techniques to capture the essence of familiar landscapes and the people who inhabit them. Each piece combines traditional shapes, textures, and forms to create dynamic visual narratives. The interplay of different media invites the viewer to experience the landmarks not only as physical spaces but as living, evolving environments. Through an imaginative fusion of artistic elements and principles—colour, contrast, shape and movement—the works reveal both personal and universal connections to home, highlighting the emotional resonance of familiar places and the stories they tell. Artist/Exhibit Statement The landscape is a common ground that holds so much memory; it almost feels like a dream. Most of my paintings are inspired by dreams, my work as a psychic medium, nostalgia and my home along the shores of Lake Huron. I love to paint the beauty of a storm; the clouds remind me of the challenges we all face every day, our individuality and the power of surrendering and persevering. www.studio140.ca Instagram: taryn.studio140 |
